Smith was among hundreds of people protesting outside of the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Inmates at the Mertropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, NY, were without power or heat throughout the weekend.

Upon reports that the inmates were enduring the city's cold weather without amenities, as well as a video showing inmates banging on the window bars of their cells circulating through social media, hundreds of people took to the jail to protest the mistreatment of the inmates.

Among the protesters was Yandy Smith, who was pepper-sprayed during the weekend-long protest. Fox 5 News reporter Lisa Evers shared a picture of Smith following the incident, with protesters aiding her in removing the spray from her eyes.

"Yandy sprayed with pepper spray at MDC trying to support a mother worried about her son," Evers captioned the photo.

In a report from the New York Times, the power and heat reportedly went out because of an electrical issue within the jail. Officials restored the power in the center on Sunday night.

On social media, Smith called out people who claimed she was only in Brooklyn for attention, writing:

"Here real change is happening because we demanded it and put in the work. Stop sitting at home judging, causing dissension, and allowing nonsense to cloud your vision of what’s right! Get up and get out there with me. You see the work and I will CONTINUE TO POST! SO THE NEXT TIME YOU SAY YANDY DOES IT FOR SOCIAL MEDIA MAKE SURE YOU ADD BUT SHE REALLY PUTS IN THE WORK AND MAKES THINGS HAPPEN!"
