This is Why Dave Chappelle Didn't Accept His Best Comedy Album Grammy Award

The explanation is far simpler than you may have imagined.

Dave Chappelle won his third Grammy award Sunday night. The honor went for his latest comedy album, Sticks & Stones. However, when the award was announced, Chappelle was nowhere to be found. Instead, country music stars Brandi Carlile and Tanya Tucker accepted the award on his behalf. Despite his initial absence, Chappelle was seen hanging out with other stars backstage during the ceremony. So what was the reason?

One of Chappelle's representatives tells Page Six that the culprit was none other than Los Angeles' infamous traffic. "It was nothing more than #LATraffic," the rep said.

Dave Chappelle is three-for-three on Grammy nominations thus far. After nearly a year away from the stage, Chappelle began touring again in 2014. In 2017, The Age of Spin and Deep in the Heart of Texas took home the Best Comedy Album honor. In 2018, Equanimity & The Bird Revelation did the same. This year, Dave beat out Jim Gaffigan's Quality Time, Ellen DeGeneres' Relatable, Aziz Ansari's Right Now, and Trevor Noah's Son of Patricia.

The three specials are Chappelle's most controversial to date. Chappelle's commentary regarding the LGBTQ community, and transgender people as well, caused a significant amount of backlash. Despite the pushback, Sticks & Stones peaked at number four on the Billboard Comedy Albums charts in the week of October 5.

Sticks and Stones is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
