The Estate of Whitney Houston Offended By Jerrod Carmichael Joke During 2023 Golden Globes

The estate of Whitney Houston is 'disappointed' in Jerrod Carmichael, who referenced Houston's death at the 2023 Golden Globes.

The estate of late R&B vocalist, Whitney Houston, is not happy with actor and comedian, Jerrod Carmichael. The Rothaniel director and star, 35, referenced Houston's untimely death while hosting the 80th Golden Globes on Tuesday night (January 10), held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

“So, we are here, live, from the hotel that killed Whitney Houston, the Beverly Hilton,” Carmichael told the shocked audience.

Following the joke, Pat Houston, the vocalist's sister-in-law and longtime manager, spoke to TMZ on Wednesday.

“The Whitney Houston Estate is disappointed in the joke and felt it was in poor taste.”

Carmichael also took jabs at Tom Cruise, Scientology and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association during Tuesday's telecast.

"I’m here because I’m black,” he told the audience. “This show, the Golden Globe Awards, did not air last year because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — which I won’t say they were a racist organization — but they didn’t have a single black member until George Floyd died. So do with that information what you will.”

Houston died on February 11, 2012 at 48-years-old, having accidentally drowned in a bathtub at the hotel. It was later revealed that heart disease and cocaine played a role in Houston’s death, which occurred on the eve of the 2012 Grammy Awards.

"Heavenly Father, we thank you for sharing our sister Whitney with us," said host LL Cool J, opening the 2012 broadcast with a prayer. "Today our thoughts are with her mother, her daughter and all of her loved ones. And although she's gone too soon, we remain truly blessed to have been touched by her beautiful spirit and to have her lasting legacy of music to cherish and share forever. Amen."
