READ: 58 People Killed And Over 515 Injured In Mass Shooting At Las Vegas Music Festival
Throughout the opening monologue, which lasted 10 minutes, Kimmel broke down in tears numerous times talking about last night’s tragic act of terrorism that left 58 dead and over 500 injured.
Last night’s act of terrorism hit Kimmel hard, particularly beacuse Vegas is Kimmel’s hometown. During his monologue, he talked about the stark difference when the terrorist is brown, not white:
“When someone with a beard attacks us, we tap phones, we invoke travel bans, we build walls. We take every possible precaution to make sure it doesn’t happen again. But when an American buys a gun and kills other Americans then there’s nothing we can do about that [because] the second amendment, I guess. Our forefathers wanted us to have AK-47s is the argument, I assume.”
The most powerful part of the monologue is when Kimmel goes after republican senators who have been lax on gun safety. He pointed out specifically highlighted 50 politicians who were the worst offenders:
Late Night comedians all had their own responses to last night’s horror. Most were based around the idea that politicians needed to do more than offer words of “prayer.” Stephen Colbert, speaking directly to Donald Trump, said:
“Do something the last two presidents haven’t been able to do. Pass any kind of common sense gun control legislation that the vast majority of Americans want.”
Seth Meyers took his aim at politicians, asking them are there “steps we can take as a nation to prevent gun violence or is this just how it’s going to continue to be?”
