On Juneteenth, Netflix will release a documentary about civil rights attorney Ben Crump. The film, which is called Civil, is set to premiere at Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday, June 12 and the Civil trailer dropped on Friday (June 3).
According to the film’s synopsis, Civil follows “an intimate vérité look following the life of maverick civil rights attorney Ben Crump as he challenges America to come to terms with what it owes his clients — including the families of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.”
“People seek me out,” Crump, also referred to as “Black America’s attorney general,” states in a voiceover from the trailer, “because they want someone they feel they can trust.”
Civil centers Crump as he tenaciously fights against racism and discrimination as an activist lawyer. Co-produced by Black-ish, Grown-ish, Mixed-ish and #blackAF creator Kenya Barris and directed by Nadia Hallgren, both are expected to be in. attendance at the Civil premiere at Tribeca Film Festival. Hallgren is notable for directing 2020 Michelle Obama documentary Becoming, which is also on Netflix. Along with Hallgren and Barris, Roger Ross Williams and Lauren Cioffi have also produced Civil.
“I have been given influence for a reason, and shame on me if I don’t use that influence,” Crump says at the conclusion of the trailer. “I know who I am and I know whose I am. Always argue for what is right.”
Civil will air on Netflix beginning Sunday, June 19.
