Ever since Warner Bros. revealed their commitment to finding a Black director to join Ta-Nehisi Coates in helming a Superman reboot with a Black Man of Steel, the rumor mill chatter has been off to the races with speculation.
Several names have been floated. Some have even claimed a shortlist of prospective directors for the film exists, with Berry Jenkins and Regina King leading the bunch. And while the Moonlight director has yet to respond, King addressed the rumors (seemingly as she was made aware of them) in a recent interview with MSNBC’s Tiffany Cross.
“Tiffany, that is news to me. You have broke the news to me,” said King through a hardy laugh, admitting she’d only just learned of the buzz building around her candidacy for the film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the rumored shortlist of directors also includes Judas and The Black Messiah‘s Shaka King, Creed II’s Steven Caple Jr., and Sleight’s J.D. Dillard. But don’t expect a decision to be made too soon. THR also notes Coates’ script won’t be turned in until December of this year, which gives the studio plenty of time to come up with the right fit for the project.
As for the film’s leading Kryptonian (or whoever ends up being the protagonist of Coates’ story,) a star has yet to be named, despite a social media campaign for Michael B. Jordan to take on the crimson cape. And the Creed actor doesn’t appear to be courting the role. “I’m flattered that people have me in that conversation,” the actor told THR earlier this year. “It’s definitely a compliment, but I’m just watching on this one,” Jordan added.
