In celebration of its 35th-anniversary, Nike has unveiled the trailer for an upcoming documentary series on the ascent of its classic Dunk silhouette.
Clocking in at just over a minute long, the trailer features snippets of interviews with athletes, designers, musicians, and general sneaker enthusiasts, all recounting their relationship with the Dunk and its myriad variations, including testimonies from Jeff Staple, Luca Benin, and Chris Gibbs amongst others.
Debuting in 1985 as a college basketball sneaker, the Dunk was a hardwood favorite for more than a decade. As the ’90s set in, the Dunk was tested on pavement, and later, on catwalks, offering the clean, simple, and durable lines of the sneaker new life as a low-key staple in the blooming subcultures of skateboarding and streetwear, as well as their countless intersections. Flashing forward to a modern fashion market obsessed with high-end drops, the Dunk has been revived as one of the sneaker giant’s most coveted subjects of limited collaborations, particularly with the arrival of its Ben & Jerry’s twist-up, which is currently going for no less than $1,400 on the secondhand market.
The Story of Dunk is the second oral history of a Nike sneaker to receive a documentary treatment this year. In March, Nike released a 25-minute primer on the history of the iconic Air Max as an accompaniment to its Air Max Day celebration.
Head over to the SNKRS site to watch a trailer for The Story of Dunk. Hold tight for the first episode’s premiere tomorrow, October 16th.
