Eddie Murphy Knows Exactly Why He Lost That Infamous Basketball Game with Prince

Eddie Murphy fact-checks his brother's account of the very real post-club showdown with Prince on the basketball court.

As we near the arrival of the Coming to America sequel, Eddie Murphy has been making the (digital) rounds in support of the film.

On one of this week's stops, Murphy joined Jimmy Fallon for a chat on The Tonight Show. Tucked into a candlelit corner of his home, the comedian reminisced over his encounters with titans of comedy, music, and sports. Murphy recalled making Richard Pryor laugh, receiving a treasured gift from Muhammad Ali, getting terrible advice from Rodney Dangerfield, and being profoundly inspired by the genius of Stevie Wonder.

Naturally, the conversation capped with a play-by-play of his infamous showdown with Prince on the basketball court, as hilariously told by his late brother Charlie Murphy in an iconic episode of Chappelle's Show. And according to Murphy, his brother's account checks out all the way down to the wardrobe. "We had on club clothes and Prince had on that outfit that was in the ‘Kiss’ video, where he had the little short shirt and the leather jacket with the buttons. He had that outfit on and a little gold chain around his waist," Murphy reflects. And true to Charlie's story, blouses did, in fact, take the game. "They beat the fuck out of us," Murphy admits before chalking up the loss to one of his teammates wearing a pair of Prince's very small shoes during the game.

After several delays, Murphy's long-awaited Coming to America sequel is officially set to premiere next Friday, March 5th, via Amazon Prime Video with the entirety of the original cast in tow, along with Tracy Morgan,
