Watch Billy Porter Become the First Openly Gay Man to Win an Emmy

Billy Porter makes history.

Billy Porter, the star of FX’s critically acclaimed show Pose, won an Emmy for Best Lead Actor in a Drama at the 2019 Emmys on Sunday (September 23rd).

It was a history-making win for Porter: he became the first openly gay man to win an Emmy for lead actor in a drama. Winning the award, Porter went on stage and gave a passionate speech.

Porter is now an Oscar away from hitting the EGOT milestone. In the past, he won a Tony for Best Actor in a Musical and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album for Kinky Boots.

Another standout moment came when Jharrel Jerome, one of the stars of the critically acclaimed Netflix mini-series When They See Us, took home a Lead Actor in a Limited Series Emmy.

During his speech, he gave a special shout out the Exonerated Five, saying:

Most important[ly], this is for the men known as the Exonerated Five," he said. "Thank you so much. It's an honor, it's a blessing.
