UGK & 8Ball & MJG ‘VERZUZ’ Celebrated Southern Rap

On Thursday, UGK and 8Ball & MJG went head-to-head on VERZUZ in Atlanta, where Big Boi, Jazze Pha, Twista, David Banner and more also appeared.

Thursday’s VERZUZ was a celebration of southern rap between headliners UGK and 8Ball & MJG. Bun B of UGK and 8 Ball & MGK took the stage in Atlanta for ten rounds, where special guests appeared to perform alongside both acts, including Big Boi, David Banner, Twista, Jazze Pha and Sleepy Brown. Christian Butler, daughter of the late Pimp C of UGK also made an appearance to thank the crowd.

Before performing, Bun B gave a shout out to Pimp C, who died in December 2007, just months after the release of their fifth album Underground Kingz. Afterwards, Bun B asked the crowd to give a moment of silence for victims of the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, which is less than a six-hour drive from Bun B’s hometown of Port Arthur.

“Before we get started, [DJ Greg] Street, if that’s alright, I wanted to take a moment of silence,” said Bun to the crowd. “21 seconds of silence to honor the 21 victims of the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas. If you have a hat on, I ask that you take your hat off.”

The battle kicked off with flipping a coin, where UGK won and decided to go second. 8Ball and MJG opened with their 1993 cut “9 Little Milimeta Boys” while UGK fired back with their 1992 single “Tell Me Something Good.”

The chemistry between 8Ball and MJG was authentic as they ran through their legendary catalog including ‘Tell The DJ Bring It Back,” “Sho Nuff’,” “My Homeboy’s Girlfriend,” “Middle of the Night Remix” and more. Bun B held his own as one-half of UGK with their classic JAY-Z collaboration “Big Pimpin,” “Let Me See It,” “Knocking Doors Down,” “One Day” and “Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You)” among others.
