Two-Night Janet Jackson Documentary Coming to Lifetime, A&E

A Janet Jackson documentary will arrive on A&E and Lifetime Networks next year.

On Wednesday during their virtual upfront, A&E and Lifetime Networks announced their upcoming programming slate. Among the news is a two-night, four-hour documentary event on Janet Jackson titled simply Janet. The documentary is co-produced by Workerbee and Associated Entertainment.

Filming for the special has been in the works for the last three years. The documentary follows Janet Jackson and her family after the loss of her father Joseph Jackson, who passed away in 2018. Janet will also detail the toughest moments in her life: the controversial 2004 Super Bowl halftime show with Justin Timberlake, her reaction to the death of Michael Jackson, as well as her experiences as a new mother. Producers were given exclusive access to archived footage and never-before-seen home videos. Expect the documentary to arrive in early 2022.

The Janet documentary is a part of A&E Network’s “Broader Focus” and “Voices Magnified” initiatives, which are meant to show the company’s commitment to hiring and amplifying content made by female creators, with pay grades above the industry’s average. The “Voices Magnified” program is meant to champion the creation of content developed by and produced by diverse voices.

“This last year has taught all of us much about the world and our place within it, as individuals and as content creators,” A+E Networks group president Paul Buccieri said. “Across our entire portfolio we’re reinforcing our strong foundation and will continue using our platforms to elevate relevant, resonant and diverse voices; telling their stories, focused on reaching the widest possible audience. As an organization, we have become even more dedicated to corporate social responsibility, proactively and positively activating our resources to impact communities everywhere. Given its importance, it is front-and-center within our presentation.”

Stay tuned for further updates on JANET.
