A Brand-New Tina Turner Documentary is Coming to HBO

The documentary hits HBO and HBO Max on March 27.

A new Tina Turner documentary is in the works. On Wednesday, HBO announced TINA would be coming to the channel and HBO Max on March 27. The company describes the project as an “unvarnished, dynamic account.”

The documentary will feature archival footage spanning 60 years, as well as interviews with Angela Bassett, Oprah Winfrey, and journalist Kurt Loder. Loder co-wrote the 1986 biography I, Tina, along with Turner. The book would go on to inspire the iconic 1993 film What’s Love Got to Do with It, in which Bassett portrayed Turner.

The announcement comes just hours after Turner was named a nominee for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2021. If inducted, Tina Turner (and/or Carole King) would be just the second woman to enter the Hall twice. Back in 1991, Turner was inducted along with her ex-husband Ike Turner.

TINA will cover Turner’s early career, rise to fame, as well as her struggles as a victim of abuse. After her divorce from Ike Turner, she released two solo albums with middling results. After signing with Capitol Records in 1984, she cemented her comeback with the album Private Dancer. The single “What’s Love Got to Do with It” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks.

Over the course of her career, Turner released ten studio albums, two live albums, two soundtracks and five compilation albums. All in all, her works sold over 100 million records. In the United Kingdom, Turner is the first artist to score a top 40 hit in seven straight decades.

Stay tuned for further updates regarding TINA.
