The Weeknd Shares First Teaser For the “Sleazy” New HBO Series ‘The Idol’

Forthcoming HBO series The Idol stars Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp, following their twisted Hollywood love story.

The Idol is coming. On Sunday (June 17), a first look at the forthcoming HBO series was released, from co-creators Sam Levinson (Euphoria, Irma Vep) and The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye. Starring Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp, The Idol follows a female pop singer who becomes romantically involved with a Los Angeles club owner and cult leader, with the trailer claiming the series is “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood.”

Along with Tesfaye and Rose-Depp, The Idol also stars Troye Sivan, Tunde Adebimpe of rock outfit TV on the Radio, Jennie Kim of K-Pop girl group Blackpink, Anne Heche, Melanie Liburd, Steve Zissis, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Hari Nef, and Nico Hiraga. The premiere date for The Idol is TBD.

Last week, Euphoria received 16 nominations for The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, including three nominations for series star Zendaya, who made history as the youngest woman producer and youngest two-time leading actor nominated at the Emmys.

Tesfaye is currently on the 2022 North American leg of The After Hours Til Dawn global stadium tour, with supporting acts Snoh Aalegra and KAYTRANADA after Doja Cat dropped out following tonsil surgery. Dates were postponed during his tour kickoff in Toronto last week during a nationwide outage of Canada’s main telecommunications company. The Idol makes the second television appearance of 2022 for the Dawn FM singer who starred as Orion Hughes and Darius Hughes in the “Bart and the Cool Kid” episode of The Simpsons earlier this year.
