John Davis served as one of the unseen voices behind controversial duo Milli Vanilli.

On Monday, South Carolina-born singer John Davis died of COVID-19 at the age of 66. Davis served as one of the vocalists behind former Grammy-winning German pop duo Milli Vanilli, providing vocals for their Billboard number-one album Girl You Know It's True. The album stayed on the charts for 78 weeks.

"Unfortunately my dad passed away this evening [from] the coronavirus," Davis' daughter Jasmin wrote on Facebook. "He made a lot of people happy with his laughter and smile, his happy spirit, love and especially through his music. He gave so much to the world! Please give him the last round of applause. We will miss him dearly."

Jasmin Davis has launched a GoFundMe campaign for her father's funeral services. Currently, the campaign is nearing its goal of 13,500 Euros.

Another American-born singer Charles Shaw served as ghost vocalist for the group, which was made up of Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan. Producer Frank Farian orchestrated the whole act. When Farian suspected Shaw would reveal the group's secret, he brought in Davis. The South Carolina native also played bass for the group.

Davis would release two albums under his own name: Joker, in 1980 and Still Be Loving You, which was recorded ten years later with Farian. He sang alongside stars like Luther Vandross, composed music for films, and performed at concerts around the world. Davis moved to Germany later in life and made occasional television appearances.

Milli Vanilli was stripped of their Best New Artist Grammy award after admitting the hoax.
