The Matrix Resurrections will be hitting theaters and HBO Max this Christmas.
Warner Bro. has released the first trailer for the The Matrix Resurrections. The movie is the fourth in the franchise and the first since the derided Matrix Revolutions in 2003. This movie will be directed by Lana Wachowski — the first three were directed by her and her sister Lilly — and will feature a very John Wick-looking Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith revisiting their roles. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Christina Ricci, and more were also added to the cast.
The movie seems like a reset. In the trailer, we see that Neo does not remember his past battles and he has to, once again, take the red pill for the first time. (Of course, if you’re a fan of the movie you know that the red pill is the road to freedom while the blue pill is a path full of ignorance and comfort. In later years, the pill stuff would become much more problematic.) Lawrence Fishburne, who famously played Morpheus, will not be returning; Fishburne said he was not asked to return. Instead, it seems like Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be playing the role of a mentor for Neo.
Earlier in the week, Warner Bros. launched an interactive website that displayed the first footage of the upcoming movie. The interactive website, which is called WhatistheMatrix (which you can check out right here) is really cool. And, according to Entertainment Weekly, there are more than 180,000 variations of the footage featured on the site. Depending on the time of day and which pill you choose you’ll see new footage from the upcoming movie.
Matrix Resurrections will hit theaters and HBO Max on December 22, 2021 (making it a Christmas movie.) Check out the first trailer below.
