The Classic Sega Video Game ‘Streets of Rage’ is Being Adapted Into a Movie

Lionsgate will turn classic ’90s Sega video game Streets of Rage into a full-length film, written by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad.

Streets of Rage will soon be coming to theaters. On Wednesday (November 17), Deadline reported that film company Lionsgate has acquired a theatrical adaptation of the classic Sega video game, which published three installments in the ’90s between 1991 to 1994. In April 2020, Sega released a long-awaited fourth game to the series, which became a bestseller.

The first SOR game centers around a group of three ex-cops who use violence to take on a crime syndicate run by the mysterious Mr. X. The video game series was also known for its soundtrack composed by Japanese composer and sound programmer Yuzo Koshiro.

Reported back in April John Wick franchise creator Derek Kolstad is writing the SOR script, also producing the film with Toru Nakahara (Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2). Also overseeing the project from Sega is former senior vice president Shuji Utsumi with dj2 Entertainment’s Dmitri M. Johnson, Timothy I. Stevenson and Dan Jevons; and Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Tony Shaw.

“When Dmitri first mentioned the idea of cracking a Streets of Rage movie, I was so immediately freaking in. And to play with Sega? The 10-year-old me is still grinning,” said Kolstad about his childhood aspiration.

“Lionsgate is one of the most dynamic studios in the entertainment industry today,” added Nakahara. “We look forward to working with them, Derek and our all-star producers to bring this compelling IP to life.”
