'Thanos' Is One of the Most Popular Marvel-Inspired Baby Names

Thanos has been one of the most popular Disney-influenced baby names since Avengers: Infinity War.

Thanos name lives on thanks to 2018 Marvel Studios epic Avengers: Infinity War. According to a new study from OrganicBabyFormula.com, 'Thanos' is the ninth-most-popular baby name based on Disney-owned characters.

Since the release of Avengers: Infinity War, 'Thanos' has risen 2,892 spots in the Social Security Administration's Name Popularity Index. Also on the list are Quill, based off of Peter Quill/Star-Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy, followed by Kristoff, Rey, Aladdin, Merida, Belle, Simba, and Olaf. Rounding out the top ten is Timon from The Lion King.

ComicBook.com spoke with Thanos creator Jim Starlin earlier this year about the villain's cultural impact.

"I mean, all these strange esoteric characters that they would never touch because back when they started it was strictly Batmans, Spider-Man, you know the heroes," Starlin said. "And the fact that Thanos has gotten as big as he has, quite frankly, surprised the hell out of me because I always thought he was just too weird and esoteric and apparently wrong. That's why I don't make movies."

Next for Phase 5 of the MCU is actor Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror, who appeared as a variant of the villain in Disney+ series Loki earlier this year. The character will next appear in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania next February.

In a profile about Majors, Ant-Man director Peyton Reed spoke with The New York Times about the presence that the actor brings to the upcoming film.

“It’s become a cliché over the decades to compare somebody to a young Marlon Brando, but Jonathan has that,” Reed said. “He has just this energy and this presence, and our movie is definitely benefiting from that.”
