Held on Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, the 2023 Golden Globes awarded top acts in television, film and music.

Our favorites in entertainment received their flowers during the 2023 Golden Globes. Held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, the ceremony was hosted by actor and comedian Jerrod Carmichael, who was the first Black person to host the 80th Golden Globe Awards.

This was a comeback of sort for the Golden Globes. This is the first — and probably last — time NBC aired the show since the release of a story that revealed the HFPA contained no Black members and had engaged in shady practices.

It was an interesting night, however, containing highs and lows. Here are five standout moments from the Golden Globes.

1.Jerrod Carmichael's $500,000 monologue 

Here is how Carmichael started out his monologue:

"I'll tell you why I'm here. I'm here because I'm Black... This show, the Golden Globe Awards, did not air last year because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — which I won't say were a racist organization, but they didn't have a single Black member until George Floyd died [in 2020]. So do with that information what you will."

He then revealed that he was offered $500,000 and he asked his friend what he should do. The response? "Boy, if you don't put on a good suit and take the White people's money.' "

2. Rihanna, Rihanna, Rihanna

Rihanna attended the event with her partner A$AP Rocky, despite the fact she didn't win an award. Her name was said countless times during the evening.

During one of Carmichael's less-controversial moments of the night, he shouted out the singer, telling her not to rush her upcoming album:

“You know what? Honestly, only because I see Rihanna is here, and I’m gonna say… I’m gonna say something very controversial that… I will actually get in trouble for this: Rihanna, you take all the time you want on that album, girl. Don’t let these fools on the internet pressure you into nothing!"

More actors acknowledged Rihanna's presence at the awards ceremony, including Billy Porter, Niecy Nash and Angela Bassett, who posed for a photo-op with the "Lift Me Up" singer-songwriter.

3. Angela Bassett's tribute to Chadwick Boseman

Angela Bassett won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While the trophy makes the first time in 30 years that Bassett has won in the category – the last being in 1994 for What's Love Got To Do With It – she's also the first individual actor to win a Golden Globe or any major award for a Marvel film.

In her speech, Bassett shared words for the late Chadwick Boseman, who played King T'Challa in the inaugural Black Panther.

"We embarked on this journey together, with love... we mourned, we loved, we healed, and we were surrounded each and every day by the light and the spirit of Chadwick Boseman," Bassett said. "We have joy in knowing that, with this historic 'Black Panther' series, it is a part of his legacy that he helped to lead us to."

4. Eddie Murphy steals the show

Eddie Murphy received the Cecil B. DeMille Award. During his brief speech he made a joke about the now-infamous Oscars slap. Sharing the blueprint to his legendary career, Murphy said, "It's very simple, just do these three things: Pay your taxes, mind your business — and keep Will Smith's wife's name out your fuckin' mouth!"

5. Abbott Elementary shines 

Abbott Elementary collected Golden Globes like Infinity Stones, with star and series creator Quinta Brunson winning for Best Television Actress Musical/Comedy Series, Tyler James Williams winning for Best Supporting Actor - Television Series and the show earning Best Musical/Comedy Series.

6. Everything Everywhere All At Once wins everything 

Oscar contender Everything Everywhere All At Once also earned Michelle Yeoh Best Actress In A Musical or Comedy Motion Picture, and Ke Huy Quan a trophy for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. In an emotional speech, Quan praised director Steven Spielburg for giving him his "first opportunity" in 1984 film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Quan also thanked Everything Everywhere directors The Daniels for "giving him an opportunity to try again," as the film was his first American release in 30 years.
