DC Studios has announced that British actor Henry Cavill will not be returning in the next Superman, citing storyline changes.

Although Superman is returning to the DCU, it appears that British actor Henry Cavill is not. Despite reports that the film is "priority" to DC Studios, on Wednesday (December 14), Cavill revealed that he will not be returning as the Man of Steel.

"I will, after all, not be returning as Superman," Cavill wrote in a statement, citing a meeting with DC Studios' co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. "After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the isn't, but that's life."

While fans were disappointed with the announcement, as Superman was last featured in the post-credits scene of Black Adam, Gunn elaborated on the decision on Twitter. Serving as writer of the film, Gunn detailed that the storyline "will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman's life."

The news comes a week after the third Wonder Woman film was scrapped, with filmmaker Patty Jenkins also writing a statement on her meeting with Gunn and Safran, saying that the production company is "buried in changes."

"I don't know if it will happen or not," Jenkins wrote. "We never do until the development process is complete, but I look forward to its potential ahead."

Next on DC Studios' lineup is Shazam! Fury of Gods next March, The Flash in June, Blue Beetle in August and Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom next Christmas.
