With a follow-up to Creed in the works, Steven Caple Jr. was handpicked by Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone to direct Creed 2.

To be clear, I have personally been waiting for Creed 2 since last year when production was announced. Making matters even more interesting, Ludwig Göransson conducted an orchestra to score the first film at the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn Festival in Prospect Park this past summer that energized the need for a sequel. Fast forward to now, and it seems that there’s more progress to be made. Cutting through the swirl of rumors and speculations of who would direct Creed 2, the cast and crew has formally announced Steven Caple Jr. as the official director of the project.

A Cleveland native (whattup 216!), Steven Caple Jr. was reportedly handpicked by Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone. With production to begin in earnest in Philadelphia in spring 2018, which comes three years after the original, Creed 2 will mark Caple’s first feature at a major studio. A selected entry to Forbes’s 2018 30 Under 30 list, Caple Jr., 29, caught everyone’s attention when his film, The Land, premiered at Sundance last year.

“We recognized Steven’s talent for telling ambitious stories with incredible heart in The Land. We are confident what he will bring to Creed 2 will result in a story that resonates with audiences all over the world,” producer Irwin Winkler to Variety. “The character of Adonis Creed reflects this generation and its challenges,” Sylvester Stallone said. “I believe it’s important for the director to also be a part of this generation like I was in mine, to make the story as relatable as possible. We are extremely lucky to have the talented young filmmaker Steven Caple Jr. step up and accept the role of director. I’m confident Michael B. Jordan will hit it out of the park.”

Circle your dates for Creed 2 to come up in Nov. 2018, plus stay tuned to @Okayplayer as we bring you the latest from this still developing project.
