A Static Shock film is still in the works, according to Nikolas Draper-Ivey, illustrator and co-writer of the DC Comics hero. Following news of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger that occurred a couple months back, it seemed as if DC-related projects were left hanging in the balance, especially after it was revealed that Warner Bros. had scrapped its $90 million Batgirl movie. Fortunately, it seems that Static Shock will be alright.
Last week, Draper-Ivey went to Twitter to clear up all rumors, saying: “Stop speculating about the Static movie. Don’t worry about those articles and be patient. I will not elaborate on this any further.”
Although it’s unknown if the live-action film will have a theatrical release or be streamed on HBO Max via Warner Bros. Discovery, the announcement for a film centering Static dates back to 2020. That year, it was publicized at DC Fandom 2020 that Reginald Hudlin, along with Milestone Media’s Denys Cowan and Michael Davis, would be teaming up for the film. Under his Outlier Society production banner, Michael B. Jordan also joined production efforts, while Randy McKinnon would write the screenplay.
According to previous reports, the film will follow 15-year-old Virgil Hawkins’ rise to becoming his electromagnetic superhero alter-ego, gaining powers after being doused with an experimental chemical. Two years after its DC Fandom 2020 announcement, there have been no updates on Static Shock progress. The final DC Extended Universe movie set to release this year is Black Adam in October, with a number of movies set to be released next year, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
