The former Georgia gubernatorial candidate speaks on what she sees for herself in the future in her latest interview. 

Stacey Abrams has shared that she believes the U.S. will elect her as president by 2040 in a new interview.

When speaking with FiveThirtyEight for their "When Women Run" project, the former Georgia gubernatorial candidate candidly spoke about her ongoing political ambitions. When asked if America will elect a black woman as president by 2040, she declared, “Yes, absolutely.” Abrams was also asked if she believes she will be elected to which she responded, “Yes. That’s my plan. And I’m very pragmatic.”

When asked if she ever grows tired of the question of whether the country is ready for a black woman to hold executive office of any kind she shared:

"I think it is a curiosity to people because they're informing not only their sensibilities but they're trying to prognosticate others. When something new is on the horizon, we are usually both equally curious and afraid. Race and gender have such a contextualized meaning in our society that I don't begrudge the question but I reject an answer that doesn't accept the wholeness of who I am."

Abrams, also a former Georgia state House minority leader is considered a star to watch in the Democratic party since speaking out about her gubernatorial bid against Republican Ryan Kemp in 2018. She would have been the first black woman ever elected governor if she won. According to CNN, the race was extremely close and Abrams filed a lawsuit that called for the counting of all votes.

After acknowledging defeat, for months she shared that she felt the situation was a “stolen election.” Mainly due to how the election was conducted, Kemp was Georgia’s secretary of state during this period.

Last August she announced she would not enter the current Democratic primary going against what many of her fans would have liked to see. She instead decided to focus on her national program which was aimed at increasing voter turnout for Democrats, titled Fair Fight 2020. Despite this, she also managed to share in an interview that same month that she would be “honored to be considered by any nominee” as a vice-presidential contender.

When asked how it feels to be discussed as a vice-presidential pick by FiveThirtyEight she shared, “I accept that I exist in the political zeitgeist in a very specific way.”
