New All-Encompassing Janet Jackson Documentary to Premiere This Month

With two installments, new Janet Jackson documentary, Janet, will premiere January 28th on Lifetime and A&E.

Notoriously known for being private about her personal life, Janet Jackson is ready to bare all. In new documentary, Janet, the icon will reveal never-before-seen footage of her private and professional life. The singer will also speak on controversies that involved her career, from her relationship with older brother Michael Jackson to her wardrobe malfunction during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show with Justin Timberlake.

The Janet release date is in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of Jackson’s 1982 self-titled debut album. Executive produced by Jackson and her brother Randy Jackson, the film is directed by Ben Hirsch. While a brief teaser of the documentary was released last September, today, Lifetime and A&E premiered a full-length trailer for Janet.

In the Janet trailer, the film uncovers the Jackson Family upbringing under the guidance of Joe Jackson whose controversial parenting made The Jackson 5 household names in the 1970s.

“There were times I just didn’t understand where I actually fit in,” Jackson said. “My father was very strict–he was in charge of my life, my career… My father said ‘you’re gonna sing.'”

Janet will feature interviews with family members including Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, who is briefly asked if she’s comfortable talking about Michael Jackson in the trailer. After saying there’s “a great deal of scrutiny” that comes with being a part of the Jackson family, she also says that Michael Jackson’s sexual abuse allegations made her “guilty by association”.

Janet follows 2021 documentary Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson, which debuted on FX and Hulu and centered Jackson’s Super Bowl performance.

Janet will also have appearances from Missy ElliottWhoopi Goldberg, Ciara, Mariah Carey, Tyler Perry, Regina King, Teyana Taylor, Janelle Monaé, Q-Tip and Samuel L. Jackson who hilariously bops to Jackson’s 1993 song “Throb” in the Janet trailer.
