Michael Jai White, the Star of the Original ‘Spawn’ Movie, Has Doubts About a Reboot: “It Doesn’t Make A Lot of Sense To Me”

The original movie’s star recently discussed issues surrounding a potential remake with ComicBook.com.

Yet another potential Hollywood reboot has received less-than-stellar feedback from its original star.

In the wake of the superhero movie boom, Image Comics founder Todd McFarlane has discussed a Spawn remake for the last couple of years. The idea garnered interest from names like Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner but the project still hasn’t gained much traction.

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the artist explained what he needs for a successful reboot. “The money’s sitting on the sidelines ready to go. I just need to get everyone that wants to put in money to shake their heads to the same script,” McFarlane said. “As you can imagine, everyone has a slightly different version of it in their head. Trying to appease a handful of people while not giving in to what it is that I’m trying to do myself. Because if I have to change it too much, I’ll just walk away from it all.”

The star of the 1997 adaption Michael Jai White doesn’t see the point. The artist is reportedly pitching the idea of a horror film in which the titular character won’t have much screen time. “I don’t understand it, personally,” White said of McFarlane’s plans. “I wish him the best of luck. But Todd explained to me that this will be a character that you didn’t see. You never see the character. It’s just a character that’s scarcely on film. Personally, I don’t get it.”

White also cited concerns about McFarlane’s lack of directorial experience. “I would think a Spawn movie would cost a lot of money, right? And if there’s somebody giving Todd McFarlane, a man who’s never directed a movie that much money, that will be a first in my experience. I’ll believe it when I see it,” White said.
