Maya Rudolph Finally Took Home an Emmy Award

Long overdue.

For more than 20 years, Maya Rudolph has been a perpetual gift to big and small-screen comedy. And this week, the late-night veteran finally got the institutional recognition she deserves.

On Thursday, the fourth night of The Emmys' untelevised segment (in which more than half of the year's awards are dished out,) Rudolph took home her first-ever Emmy for the role of Connie The Hormone Monster in Netflix's Big Mouth after eight winless prior nominations. A regular on the series throughout its three seasons on the steamer, Rudolph was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance, topping Taikia Waititi's IG-11 in The Mandalorian, Wanda Sykes' Gladys in Crank Yankers, Leslie Odom Jr's Owen in Central Park, and Hank Azaria's multitude of roles on The Simpsons.

What's more, Rudolph could walk away with a second award at this year's ceremony for Outstanding Guest Actress, competing against herself in the category for appearances on Saturday Night Live and The Good Place (an Emmys first.) But the praise is already pouring in from Big Mouth star and co-creator, Nick Kroll (see below.) Rudolph's win was the first of two for the raunchy animated show. Big Mouth also took home the award for Outstanding Derivative Interactive Program (a real category,) for their Big Mouth Guide To Lifeweb series.

The show is set to return this fall with at least one new voice on board. Ayo Edebiri, a new addition to the writer's room, will replace Jenny Slate as Missy on the series at the tail-end of its upcoming fourth season after the comedian stepped down from the role, citing the need for black actors to voice black characters. Edebiri is already locked-in to voice Missy for Big Mouth's fifth season as well.

A precise date on the new volume has yet to be announced. Hold tight for updates in the weeks ahead.
