Mary J. Blige Will Only Sing One Song During Super Bowl Halftime Show

In a new interview with Elle, Mary J. Blige said she wants "Family Affair" to be the song she performs at the Super Bowl Halftime show.

Mary J. Blige may have decided what song she'll perform for next month's Super Bowl Halftime show. During a recent interview with Elle, the "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul" spoke about her classic 2001 single "Family Affair" being her top choice. The No More Drama cut is also a favorite of Dr. Dre, who produced it and Blige believes that the album's hip-hop impact was felt worldwide.

“Hip-hop is East Coast. Hip-hop is West Coast,” Blige said. “Hip-hop is Europe — this is why it’s going to be so major, because this is what the Super Bowl is showing to people: It’s not just one thing. [Hip-hop] is everywhere," she said. “We are the culture; [hip-hop artists] give people a way to speak. We give people a way to walk. We give people a way to talk. We give people a way to think. That’s what hip-hop and hip-hop soul have done for our culture since [the beginning].”

The singer also spoke about what gracing the halftime stage means for her.

“It’s like getting an Oscar nomination. This time I’m going to be front and center — Mary J. Blige, in her glory and greatness and swagger,” she said.

On Sunday, February 13th, Blige will join Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar and Eminem in the a Dr. Dre-led Super Bowl Halftime show at SoFi Stadium. The move comes after Roc Nation merged with the NFL in 2019 to become the league's “live music entertainment strategist.”

An F. Gary Gray-directed trailer for the upcoming halftime show premiered last week, with each performer handpicked by Dr. Dre answering 'the call' from the rapper-producer-mogul.
