Dr. Dre is currently focused on bringing Marvin Gaye‘s story to the big screen. The rapper, who served as a producer for the 2015 film Straight Outta Compton, is in the early stages of bringing the film to fruition, according to a report from Variety. The report also notes that Dr. Dre has rights to use Gaye’s music as well.
Numerous directors and actors have tried to make a movie about Gaye including F. Gary Gray, Cameron Crowe, James Gandolfini, Scott Rudin, Jesse L. Martin, and Lenny Kravitz.
Two years ago, Gaye’s estate and Berry Gordy gave their blessing to a series on the singer that’ll be led by Jamie Foxx. Foxx signed on as executive producer of the still unnamed series, which is being developed by de Passe Jones Entertainment with Gaye’s son, Marvin Gaye III, consulting on the series.
In both Foxx and Dr. Dre’s projects focused on the What’s Going On singer, it’s unknown who’ll star in the lead role. Mahershala Ali has already voiced his dream of playing Gaye, previously telling the Associated Press:
“I would love to be able to connect with the family about that and, first and foremost, to have their blessing. Because that would be a dream role. I am such a fan and admirer of Marvin Gaye: the man and the musician and the artist…I would love dearly to do that project and bring some aspect of Marvin Gaye’s life to the screen and to assist and participate in that. That would be a dream come true.”
