Terence Nance, the creator of the HBO TV series Random Acts of Flyness, was initially attached to direct the Warner Bros. sequel. But according to a report from Deadline, Nance's leave was because he "and the studio/producers had different takes on the creative vision for Space Jam 2." The report also noted that Nance's leave was amicable.

Lee has directed comedies such as Girls Trip and Night School. Lee joins Space Jam 2 producers Ryan Coogler and LeBron James. James has been involved with Space Jam 2 since 2015, when his production company, SpringHill Entertainment, signed a deal with Warner Bros.

"The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie," James previously said of the film. "It's so much bigger. I'd just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don't just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people."

The film is set for a July 16, 2021 release date.
