Macaulay Culkin is Down With Scrubbing Donald Trump From ‘Home Alone 2’

The Home Alone star co-signed a campaign calling to edit Donald Trump out of the film.

It’s been a rough couple of weeks for President Donald Trump, and it could get even worse. After Trump was impeached for the second time, Macaulay Culkin is now in favor of the president being removed from Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.  

Culkin simply responded “sold.” to a viral tweet from Twitter user @rachellobaugh that reads “petition to digitally replace Trump in Home Alone 2 with 40-year-old Macaulay Culkin.” Twitter user @maxschramp went ahead and took the job upon himself, editing Trump out of his hotel lobby scene.

In an interview with Insider from December 2020, the movie’s director Chris Columbus remarked that Trump “did bully his way into the movie” in exchange for allowing the movie to be filmed in The Plaza Hotel. The move was originally a success. “When we screened it for the first time,” Columbus said, “the oddest thing happened: people cheered when Trump showed up on screen. So I said to my editor, ‘leave him in the movie. It’s a moment for the audience.”

Disney Plus is currently in the process of remaking the movie, with Dan Mazer directing a script written by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. Columbus is not involved, and doesn’t seem to be a fan of rebooting the franchise.

“I’m a firm believer that you don’t remake films that have had the longevity of Home Alone, he said. “You’re not going to create lightning in a bottle again. It’s just not going to happen. So why do it? It’s like doing a paint-by-numbers version of a Disney animated film–a live-action version of that. What’s the point? It’s been done. Do your own thing. Even if you fail miserably, at least you have come up with something original.”
