Joker: Folie à Deux officially has its leading lady – Lady Gaga, that is. On Thursday (August 4), the Chromatica artist confirmed on social media that she will star opposite Joaquin Phoenix in the musical sequel to 2019’s Joker. The teaser of the clip is set to “Cheek to Cheek, which Gaga covered with Tony Bennett on their 2014 collaborative album of the same title. Although it’s rumored that she’ll be portraying Harley Quinn, Joker’s longtime love interest, in the film, it hasn’t been confirmed yet who she’ll actually be.
In June, director Todd Phillips revealed the Folie à Deux subtitle, which refers to “a medical term for an identical or similar mental disorder that affects two or more individuals, usually members of the same family,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Phillips last worked with Gaga in 2018, producing musical reboot A Star Is Born. Performed by Gaga and co-star Bradley Cooper, “Shallow” from A Star Is Born won an Oscar for Best Original Song at the 2019 Academy Awards.
Gaga is currently on an all-stadium tour, The Chromatica Ball, which ends on September 17 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. The tour is in support of her 2020 dance-pop album Chromatica, which received a Best Pop Vocal Album nomination at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. On Tuesday (August 2), Gaga and Bennett were surprised with an Emmy nomination for their One Last Time: An Evening with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga special, which released last November.
Joker: Folie à Deux will release in theaters October 4, 2024 via Warner Bros. Pictures.
