To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Stephen Colbert honored the film with a surprise rap called “#1 Trilly”.
Praising the film series as being the greatest trilogy ever released — and making a “worldwide gross of almost three billy”— the Lord of the Rings cast teamed up with Method Man and Killer Mike for the parody cut. Throughout the visual, Colbert is joined by the show’s musical director Jon Batiste, who has garnered eight nominations for the 2022 Grammy Awards for his 2021 album We Are.
LOTR cast members Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Hugo Weaving, Andy Serkis, Orlando Bloom and Viggo Mortensen gave nerdy praise to the film, with Weaving rapping in Elvish towards the song’s end. Anna Kendrick also joined in on the fun, acknowledging that her films Pitch Perfect and Twilight didn’t live up.
The trilogy nabbed 17 Oscars, and Method Man referenced that LOTR won more than film series’ Mad Max, Toy Story and Eon Productions’ James Bond combined. Killer Mike jumped in “#1 Trilly” to proclaim that Lord of the Rings had “Sexy elves all over Lothlórien”.
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was added to the National Film Registry as part of 25 titles including Cooley High, Selena, Richard Pryor: Live in Concert and more. The National Film Registry, annually lists movies deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”.
