Last week, Kanye West denounced his involvement in Candace Owens’ “Blexit” campaign, after the alt-right mouthpiece claimed the rapper contributed logo designs to a line of tees and caps for the (failed) “Black Exit” initiative. The rapper was so incensed by the notion of his participation, that he’s since claimed to be distancing himself from politics altogether in a statement delivered via Twitter.
Just before his departure from political stage, West donated a sizeable sum of $73,540 to the campaign of Amara Enyia, a Democrat running for mayor in Chicago. According to The Chicago Tribune, the initial donation covered, to the penny, fines sanctioned by state officials for not properly filing quarterly campaign finance reports. And this week, West (nearly) doubled-down with another donation of $126,460, rounding out a total of $200,000 in campaign contributions to the progressive candidate.
Enyia is running to replace current mayor, Rahm Emanuel, stepping down after his second term, as approval ratings plummet in response to his vocal opposition of an investigation into the Chicago PD following the murder of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald at the hands of officer Jason Van Dyke in October of 2014.
