Justin Timberlake will be headlining the Super Bowl LII Pepsi Halftime show next year in Minneapolis. The performance was announced Sunday night (October 22) before Sunday Night Football via a social media skit video with Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon.

Following the announcement, Timberlake spoke with Football Night in America's Mike Tirico about his hopes for the performance.

"What I really want to do is take the opportunity to put together a performance that feels like it unifies," The singer said. "I feel like that would be the ultimate accomplishment, and then the icing on the cake is at some point, within that 12 minutes, that everybody is shaking their booty."

Timberlake also addressed his 2004 Super Bowl halftime show alongside Janet Jackson, during which he briefly exposed her breast which was later described as a "wardrobe malfunction." Tirico had asked the artist if the NFL ever brought up the Jackson controversy during negotiations, to which Timberlake responded: "That won't happen this time. There was a little bit of that. But…no, Mike, that's not going to happen."

Some people are not happy with Timberlake being chosen to headline next year's Super Bowl halftime performance, with Twitter users creating the Justice For Janet hashtag in response. The hashtag stems from how Timberlake and Jackson were treated following the controversy surrounding their performance, with the former's career still flourishing while the latter arguably took most of the blame for the incident.

Although some Twitter users also spoke of Jackson being banned from the Super Bowl, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy clarified that the artist is not banned at all from the event, although he did not offer any insight into who might appear as a guest during the halftime performance.
