A lot of people weren’t happy with Green Book winning the Oscar for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards, including Spike Lee. The BlacKkKlansman director reportedly was “waving his arms in disgust and appearing to try to storm out of the Dolby Theatre before he was stopped at the doors,” after Green Book was announced as the winner.
Now, Jordan Peele, who served as a producer on BlacKkKlansman, spoke on Lee’s response to Green Book‘s.
“I think ultimately he had a visceral reaction to the outcome,” Peele told Indiewire. “Spike is a really amazing character. He can seem angry, but then that little smirk comes on his face and you know he’s kind of putting you on. He’s always honest and truthful, but he’s an entertainer and he’s fun.”
“At the end of the day, Spike had a great night,” Peele continued. “In some way, his legacy was fulfilled.”
Lee continued offering his thoughts on Green Book‘s win well after the show was done, saying that he “thought it was courtside at the Garden and the ref made a bad call.”
“Every time somebody’s driving somebody, I lose,” Lee jokingly said. “But they changed the seating arrangement. But in ’89 I didn’t get nominated. This one, we did.”
