Lupita Nyong’o takes on the lead role of Adelaide Wilson in Jordan Peele‘s upcoming film Us. But even when Nyong’O was first approached to be in Peele’s follow-up to Get Out without even knowing who she’d be portraying, she said yes.
Speaking with Buzzfeed News’ Profile, Nyong’o revealed that her enthusiasm for Get Out played an important part for her want to work with Peele, even admitting that she saw the movie five times in one month while working on Black Panther.
“Black Panther was intense and time-consuming and all-encompassing,” she said. “But I found time to go to the cinema five times in one month while I was working on that film to watch Get Out.”
“[Peele] created a cinematic experience that we could grab and take with us,” she continued. “It became such a joy to just live in his mind. I was just like, I need to work with that guy right there.”
Us premiered last week at SXSW. Peele previously explained how Us and Get Out are different, discussing the former as a “horror film without any caveats” that not only tackles race but also how the movie industry views race.
“There hasn’t been a horror film about a black family, that I can remember. I think that’s an important thing to note. We have a lot of films in this genre where a family meets a monster, but the fact we’ve never seen a black family in that situation is a problem to me,” Peele said. “There’s a presumption in the industry that if black people are the leads in a film it has to be in some way about race. I wanted to show that we can push past that.”
