However, the first one is very significant, considering Peele is now the fifth black director to ever be nominated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science for the Best Director award. The first black director to ever receive the nomination was John Singleton for Boyz n the Hood. After Singleton there was Lee Daniels for Precious (2009), Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave (2013), and Barry Jenkins for Moonlight (2017).

Since the nominations were announced Peele has taken to Twitter to express his excitement.

“What’s the opposite of the Sunken Place?” Peele tweeted, before adding “I just spoke to Daniel. You know when you’re on the phone trying to disguise the sound of an ugly cry? I failed at that.”

“Right now I’m just thinking about everyone who bought a ticket and told someone else to. You did this. Thank you,” Peele wrote.

Aside from Get Out, Guillermo del Toro‘s Shape of Water scored big for this year’s Oscar nominations. The film received 13 (the second most ever) noms which includes Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress in a Leading Role for Sally Hawkins, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Octavia Spencer.
