The Clown Prince returns

Production on Todd Phillips' much-hyped Joker standalone film is officially underway. And the director's already sharing sights from the set, including early looks at Joaquin Phoenix as the iconic namesake villain.

The director posted stark official stills of Phoenix and co-star Zazie Beetz, as well as a camera test of Phoenix's transformation to his Instagram. Though Pheonix is the new face, Robert De Niro and Marc Maron are confirmed to star alongside him in Phillips' vision of The Clown Prince, though their roles have yet to be revealed. In the comment section of the still featuring Beetz's character, Sophie Dumond, Phillips noted that the production has been plagued by paparazzi and that his release of the photos was to head off less flattering shots from the set.

Sources have speculated that the film, produced and written by Phillips with 8 Mile's Scott Silver, is loosely inspired by the beloved Alan Moore graphic novel,The Killing Joke, and Martin Scorcese's 1982 film, The King ofComedy, though that remains to be confirmed.

Joker is due on October 4th, 2019. Get an early peek below.
