On Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards. Nominees included household names like Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield, who were (confusingly) both nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Judas and the Black Messiah. Amongst the Judas confusion two unlikely candidates, Joey Bada$$ and Diddy, earned nominations for Two Distant Strangers, nominated for Best Live Action Short Film. Diddy produced the film, while Joey holds the role of the main character.
“I’m officially Oscar-nominated,” Joey wrote on Twitter. “That’s crazy…imma be a f—-ing EGOT.”
The 28-minute film was filmed during quarantine, and follows a cartoonist named Carter James (played by Joey). After spending the night with a friend, James bumps into a stranger and is eventually apprehended by police. In the vein of the 1993 comedy Groundhog Day, James goes on to relive the same day repeatedly.
“Filming in the middle of a pandemic, in just five days, brought numerous challenges,” the Two Distant Strangers Instagram posted in response. “But our team was united and persevered. Thank you to everyone that has believed in us and helped us to get to this point. We can’t wait to share this story with everyone.”
Joey Bada$$ has been gaining momentum in the film industry after his role on USA Network’s Mr. Robot. Since then, he’s earned recurring roles in BET’s Boomerang and Freeform’s Grown-ish. Joey is also playing Inspectah Deck in Hulu’s Wu-Tang: An American Saga series.
Stay tuned for further updates on Diddy and Joey Bada$$.
