Janelle Monae is Pushing to Play Storm in the 'Black Panther' Sequel

Janelle Monae spoke with Empire about meeting with the Black Panther cast in Atlanta.

Months from now, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to begin its Phase 4. Last year, the film studio confirmed upcoming sequels to its newest franchises, Black Panther and Captain Marvel. In an interview with Empire, Janelle Monae expressed her desire to join the team.

"I definitely have thrown it out there," she said. "One of my dreams has always been to play Storm. I don't know if she comes in Black Panther, but it would be a dream to have her in it. I don't know where they are with that. A lot of women have played Storm and they've done an exceptional job, and I would love to be in that line of artists and get to do Storm justice."

Disney's recent acquisition of 20th Century Fox gives the company license to incorporate characters from the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises into the lineup. For the record, in the Marvel Comics universe, Black Panther's T'Challa and Storm's Ororo Munroe were childhood friends who eventually separated to join their respective factions. At one point, the two were romantically linked, and even married at one point. So at the very least, there's room for Storm in the upcoming Black Panther 2. Janelle also says that she's spoken with Ryan Coogler about the possibility of joining the forthcoming sequel's cast.

Monae revealed that while recording her latest album Dirty Computer, Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o, and Michael B. Jordan took a break from filming Black Panther to visit her Wondaland studio.
