HBO and loyal Insecure fans bid adieu to the series on Sunday night (December 26th), which ended with the finale “Everything Gonna Be, Okay?” Using hashtag #InsecureHBO to discuss the finale, viewers tuned in to the 41-minute episode, where Kelli (Natasha Rothwell) announced a pregnancy, Tiffany (Amanda Seales) expressed grievances with moving to Denver, Molly (Yvonne Orji) and Taurean (Leonard Robinson) got hitched and Issa Dee (Rae) reconciled with Lawrence (Jay Ellis).
Some were shocked about Issa’s decision to patch things up with Lawrence, but in an exclusive post-finale interview with Variety, Rae shared spoke on the two mending their relationship:
“I stand by the fact that Issa should have broken up with Lawrence during that time [at the end of Season 4]. I think that was the best decision she could have made for herself and for them, because he was going to be in a toxic relationship and needed that time to adjust to being a father,” she said. “One of the other things that one of our writers [co-executive producer] Laura Kittrell, brought up is just the idea that, in Season 4, we essentially set up the idea that Issa and Lawrence were soulmates. And by denying the chance for them to get together, we’re basically saying that Issa doesn’t deserve her soulmate, which is so antithetical to her victory and her going after what she wants. So that was also went into the final decision to make them end up together.”
After the finale was the documentary, The End, which broke down the impact Insecure has had on entertainment. Fans were sentimental, reminiscing on the Insecure era.
As Rae is co-producing current HBO reality series Sweet Life: Los Angeles, Essence has announced that’s she’ll also produce upcoming teen sci-fi series The Awoken through entertainment company ColorCreative.TV. As creator of 2022 HBO Max comedy Rap Sh*t, the series will be executive produced by Yung Miami and JT of City Girls with music composition by Devonté Hynes.
The Insecure creator booked and busy throughout 2022, with a part in upcoming horror flick Vengeance and portraying Spider-Woman in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One).
