In a report from Variety, Casey Bloys, the chief content officer of HBO and HBO Max, shared that the show will be removed from the streaming service before the end of the year.
“We had a conversation with Dave. I won’t get into it, but it’s very clear that it’s a very unique and specific and emotional issue he’s got,” Bloys said. “So at the end of the year, at the end of this year, December 31st, we’re going to honor his request and take the show down.”
This comes after a recent video Dave Chappelle recently shared where he spoke on both Netflix and HBO Max adding Chappelle’s Show to their streaming libraries. In an 18-minute video posted to Instagram with the caption “Unforgiven. This is why,” Chappelle revealed his frustration with the fact his departure from Comedy Central gave him no input on his show’s appearance on the streaming services. He also asked his fans not to watch the show because, as he revealed on Saturday Night Live on Election Night, he isn’t being paid for it, either.
“When I found out they were streaming Chappelle’s Show I was furious,” he says in the video, “how could they not know? I called them and told them that this makes me feel bad…they agreed [to remove it].”
“I think if you’re streaming that show, you’re fencing stolen goods,” he continued. “They stole that from me, they just took it. When I quit my show, they said I was crazy. What was crazy about it? I just didn’t want to do it anymore!”
When the show first disappeared from Netflix, a number of tweets started to pop up, with users wondering why the streaming service had taken down the popular sketch comedy series.
