Ice Cube is looking to regain the rights to his classic Friday franchise. The rapper, actor and business mogul stopped by podcast Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson, where he chopped it up with the boxing legend and former NBA player Matt Barnes about his issues with Warner Bros. Pictures.
“Warner Brothers is weird right now,” Cube said. “I don’t know what they doing, they don’t know what they doing. We’d love to have it back. I think it’s gon’ be close to a time when we get it back. So, we’ll either wait for that time, or we’ll keep trying to convince them that they need to let us control the movie. It’s my movie, but they have distribution control.”
Tyson then asked whether Cube has considered purchasing the rights to the Friday films, to which the “It Was A Good Day” artist declined.
“I ain’t putting shit up for it. Fuck no,” he said. “They need to give it to me, and they gon’ make money. I’m not about to pay for my own stuff, that’s stupid … They need to do the right thing, get it to us, let us turn it into more money, and make the fans happy … We can do a lot with it.”
The legendary West Coast rapper mentioned that he wrote two screenplays titled Last Friday, which was intended to be the fourth movie in the franchise. Noting that Warner Bros. refused the first script because “the timing wasn’t right,” Cube added that the second script “was in development hell.”
“They just kept giving you note after note after note, never giving you the green light,” he said.
While his Friday dreams are on hold, on Friday (November 9) Cube will release his debut collaboration LP with supergroup Mount Westmore, which includes Snoop Dogg, E-40 and Too Short.
