In a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Lyn Orletsky, a math teacher at River Ridge High School, had told two of her students wearing the slogan made popular by Donald Trump that it was like wearing a swastika. Orletsky ultimately asked the students wearing the shirts to turn them inside out. The incident was caught on video and was circulated across social media.
On Friday came news that the school’s principal had let Orletsky go and assigned a substitute teacher to the class until they find a permanent replacement.
“Her actions were wrong, as the ‘Make America Great Again’ shirts worn by the students are not a violation of our school district dress code,” Cherokee County Schools spokeswoman Barbara Jacoby said.
A petition was also made demanding Orletsky’s resignation from the school, with the petition’s creator Dwain Allen writing:
We are asking for the resignation of the math teacher Lyn Orletsky at River Ridge High School in Woodstock, Ga. On August 31st, 2017 she demanded two students to turn their Trump ‘Make America Great Again’ shirts inside out because she said the slogan represents Neo-Nazis and you might as well be wearing a Swaztika on your chest at school. This type of Ignorance should not be tolerated in our community and goes against the ethics that we as Americans come to expect.
