"I Lost Today, But I'm Undefeated in Court!": Freddie Gibbs Reacts to Losing Best Rap Album Grammy to Nas

Freddie Gibbs spoke on missing out on his first Grammy nomination during a small gathering.

On Sunday, Nas won the first Grammy Award of his career for his latest album King's Disease, after 14 nominations. The rap world had mixed responses, as many felt the award should go to Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist for Alfredo. In the weeks leading up to the awards, Gibbs campaigned heavily for the award, performing on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, releasing a deluxe edition of Bandana, and more. After King's Disease was announced as the winner, Gibbs gave a gracious concession speech to a group of family and friends.

"I lost today," Gibbs announced, "but I'm undefeated in court!"

In September 2016, Gibbs was acquitted of sexual assault charges in Austria after spending 37 days in two different jails. He faced up to 10 years in prison after he and a now-former friend were accused of sexual abuse. Gibbs still maintains his innocence.

“I walked in the courtroom with my head held high and I walked out the courtroom with my head held high ’cause I know I didn’t do shit,” Gibbs told XXL at the time. “The whole time, it was a four-hour trial, I knew I was winning the whole time. It’s like, when Floyd Mayweather is cruising in a fight, that’s how I felt the whole time. My lawyer kept winking at me and like, ‘Yeah, we’re good.’ So basically, they just wasted four months of my muthafuckin’ life for this and I’m about to slam-dunk in y’all faces. It was a great feeling. I was going home, my daughter was there, Erica was there. It was great. It was just like, I’m about to go home. But that shit really took a lot out of me.
