A Street in the Bronx Will Now Be Known as “Fred the Godson Avenue”

The intersection of Leggett Ave and Kelly Street will now honor Fred the Godson.

Monday marked what would be Fred the Godson‘s 42nd birthday. In honor of the fallen Bronx MC, his hometown of the Bronx has honored him by renaming his home cross-streets after him. The corner of Kelly Street and Leggett Avenue will now be known as Frederick “Fred the Godson” Thomas Avenue.

Bronx borough president Ruben Diaz, as well as Jim Jones, Fat Joe, Sway Calloway spoke at the ceremony in remembrance of Fred.

“I’m thrilled that Fred’s name and legacy are being recognized all over the world,” Sway said during his speech. “I always wondered why they named streets after certain people…these are people who made a positive impact on others’ lives. These are people who made their community an even better place than it was before they were here. The names on these signs are people you could look up at on any given day and be inspired. No matter what circumstances they lived in, these are people who found a way regardless.”

The event also featured a live performance from Jaque and TBM Fat Boy Izzo.

“You represented our great borough to the fullest,” Diaz said during his speech. “You were an ambassador to the borough whose metaphors and wordplay were unmatched, we will never forget your legacy.”

As a gift for his fans, a nine-track posthumous Fred the Godson album called Ascension has been released as well. Find the album on all digital streaming platforms.

Fred the Godson died from COVID-19 on April 23, 2020. He is survived by his wife LeeAnn Jemmott and two daughters.
