On Tuesday, NPR shared the latest episode of its Tiny Desk (Home) Concert series featuring legendary rapper Fat Joe. Live from his retail boutique UP NYC, the Bronx MC was joined by his longtime DJ Ted Smooth for a five-track medley spanning his 20-plus year career. Stream the full performance below.
“You know Joe Crack had to take Tiny Desk to UP NYC,” he wrote on Instagram Tuesday morning. “Thank you NPR…shout out to Tiny Desk for coming uptown!”
Joe begins the set with the Buckwild-produced Jealous Ones Still Envy track “My Lifestyle,” before going to the album’s hit single, the duet with Ashanti “What’s Luv?” From there, Joe went into his Scott Storch-produced chart-topping single “Lean Back,” to his latest: “Sunshine (The Light),” a collaboration with rising viral star producer/DJ Amorphous that blends Luther Vandross’ “Never Too Much” and Rihanna’s “Kiss it Better.” Joe closes the set with the summertime anthem “All the Way Up.”
Joe is joined by Terror Squad/Roc Nation signee and fellow Bronx native Angelica Vila, who steps in with the background vocals, Eugene “Man-Man” Roberts on keys, Rashid Williams on the drums, Eric Whatley on bass, and Simon Martinez on lead guitar.
“Almost didn’t make it [because] my allergies had me so congested,” Vila would later write on Instagram. “I didn’t want to scare nobody though, so I pulled it together! Was too grateful for this opportunity. Shout out to the amazing band/team.”
