'Family Guy' Under Fire for Nipsey Hussle Joke From 2021 Episode

A Family Guy episode from April 2021 has resurfaced, with a joke referencing late West Coast rapper Nipsey Hussle.

Fox animated seriesFamily Guy is being called out for an old episode that references the late Nipsey Hussle. On Tuesday morning (January 24), a Twitter user brought attention to a snippet from Family Guy episode "Young Parent Trap," which originally aired in April 2021. In one scene, Chris Griffin (Seth Green) tells his father, Peter (Seth MacFarlane), that he'll be attending a local music festival named 'Quachella.'

“They’re gonna have holograms of Tupac and also Nipsey Hussle, who I’d never heard of and then was told to care immensely about,” Chris says in the clip.

The post has since gone viral, with fans of Nipsey calling Family Guy out over its dark humor towards the Los Angeles native's death. Chris' reference to Tupac is also a nod towards Dr. Dre's headlining set during Coachella in 2012, where a Tupac hologram performed with the rapper-producer and special guest Snoop Dogg.

During his life, Nipsey was regarded as an underground legend with mixtapes including Crenshaw and Slauson Boy 2, before releasing his debut and final album Victory Lap in 2018. With appearances from Kendrick Lamar, YG, Diddy, Stacy Barthe, Buddy, Marsha Ambrosius and more, the album was Grammy-nominated for Best Rap Album in 2019, losing to Cardi B's debut Invasion of Privacy.

Less than two months after the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, on March 31, 2019, Nipsey was killed in front of the Marathon Clothing Store on Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue. His alleged killer, Eric Holder, was convicted of first-degree murder in July 2022. His sentencing has since been postponed.

Nipsey's rap peers have paid tribute to the fallen rapper in songs, including Big Sean, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar, who replicated Nipsey's appearance using deepfake technology in "The Heart Part 5" music video.
