Could Badu become the voice of cultural Texas icon Big Tex?

Erykah Badu is a woman of many, many talents — not even a pandemic can stop her from redefining how music fans are experiencing online concerts during this time.

Now, Badu may also end up adding another accomplishment to her already long and impressive resume — the voice of a 55-foot Texas statue. That's right, the Dallas-based singer has auditioned to be the voice of Big Tex, the cultural Texas icon that has been a part of the annual State Fair of Texas in Dallas since 1952.

Badu did her audition video alongside Central Track's (a Dallas online culture outlet) co-founder Pete Freedman. The idea came about after Central Track suggested that Badu should be the new voice of Big Tex.

"Back on April 1, the State Fair of Texas announced it was looking for someone new to voice its most recognizable figurehead, Big Tex," an article on the website reads. "But, the truth is, we aren’t really sure why there is a search at all. The obvious choice has been right in front of us all along: Erykah Badu."

Central Track has also created a petition supporting Badu as Big Tex.

Originally a Santa Claus in the small Texas town of Kerens, state fair officials bought Big Tex for $750 in 1951. In 2012, the statue was destroyed by an electrical fire that started in the right boot and worked its way up the structure. The statue was recreated the following year. So far, only six people have ever voiced Big Tex, with the most well-known voice being radio announcer Jim Lowe, who held the job for 39 years.

In related news, Badu participated in the latest Verzuz match alongside Jill Scott this past weekend.
