Michaela Coel, Donald Glover Talk COVID-19, George Floyd, Parenthood

Michaela Coel and Donald Glover had an interesting conversation for GQ.

In the most recent issue of Great Britain's GQ, Donald Glover and Michaela Coel joined each other on a Zoom call for a special conversation. The two discussed the COVID-19 pandemic, the thought processes behind some of their most famous works, and more.

Donald Glover spoke at length about parenting. The 37-year-old has a four-year-old son, Legend, and just recently welcomed a baby boy, Drake, into the world. Unfortunately, the timing coincided with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the viral video of George Floyd being killed by Minneapolis police.

"It was nuts," Glover said," I was in the hospital bed. My son had just been born, like, an hour before and I was watching the George Floyd video. It was such a weird moment...because I’m watching that video and it’s like eight minutes long, so you’re sitting there and I had just had this amazing, joyful, expanding moment, plus my dad had passed away recently, so [my son] was named after my father... I don’t even know what, really, the word is to describe it. It was just expanding: the empathy and compassion and the terror and the joy of it."

Glover also discussed the similarities of writing music and writing for television.

"With writing," he explained, "I definitely feel, like on the last project and on the project I'm working now, musically too, it's all spiritual...A feeling of "I love us. I love me." I really do."

Stay tuned for further updates about new releases from Donald Glover.
