DMX Estate Valued at Less than $1 Million in Court Filings

A Westchester County Surrogate's Court has begun proceedings in evaluating the DMX family estate.

In the month following the tragic death of legendary rapper/actor DMX, two groups of his children have filed Surrogate's Court papers seeking to become administrators of his estate. On May 10th, his daughters Sasha Simmons and Jada Oden filed in Westchester County, New York. Sons Xavier, Tacoma, and Sean Simmons filed their documents on May 21st.

The two groups are opposed as to just how much the estate is worth. According to court documents, the daughters estimate the estate is worth less than $50,000, while the sons believe the value is just under $1 million.

Attorneys for both groups declined to comment. According to the New York Daily News, a source familiar with the estate believes the value could grow drastically in the future. "I don't doubt it," the unnamed source said. "This music will last into eternity."

On Friday (May 28th), the catalog will grow with the release of Exodus, the final album DMX was working on before his passing. According to Swizz Beatz, the fans' response to the Verzuz battle with Snoop Dogg spurred him to complete the album.

"When he did Verzuz and went to the next level, because he sees the people still had love for him," Swizz said in an interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe. "“A lot of artists, they don’t really know how the people feel about them. People can see you in the street, but music wise and how is that appreciation. Yeah. You want to take a picture, but do you really mess with me?”

When his songs returned to the Billboard Hot 100 after the event, he became more motivated to put the project out.

"He was just pumped up," Swizz continued. "He was like the only thing I don’t like about my Verzuz is I wasn’t able to do something new. I want to give all of these people that’s looking at me something new immediately. That’s when that’s the album started.”
